Preserve Your Wood Bowls for a Lifetime with These Techniques

With proper care, a handmade wood bowl can last for generations and become a family heirloom. Ensuring the life of your purchase is easier than you may think. We've created a step-by-step guide on how to care for a wood bowl:

Step 1: Clean the Bowl

  • Start by gently washing your wood bowl with warm water and a mild dish soap.
  • Use a soft cloth or sponge to wipe away any dirt or food particles.
  • Avoid using abrasive scrubbers or harsh chemicals as they can damage the wood.

Step 2: Dry Thoroughly

  • After washing, ensure that the bowl is completely dry before proceeding.
  • Use a clean, lint-free cloth to dry the bowl. If necessary, let it air dry in a well-ventilated area.

Step 3: Apply Food-Safe Oil

  • Once the bowl is dry, apply a food-safe oil specifically designed for wood. We recommend walnut oil or a food-safe wax. Mineral oil is not recommended, as it can become tacky to the touch and attract dust.
  • Using a clean cloth or a brush, apply a thin, even layer of oil to the entire surface of the bowl, including the inside and outside.
  • Allow the oil to penetrate the wood for the recommended duration specified on the oil packaging.

Step 4: Wipe Off Excess Oil

  • After the designated time, use a clean cloth to wipe off any excess oil from the bowl.
  • Ensure that no oil remains on the surface, as it can become sticky or attract dust.

Step 5: Let the Bowl Rest

  • Place the wood bowl on a clean, dry surface and allow it to rest undisturbed for at least 24 hours.
  • This resting period allows the oil to fully absorb into the wood, enhancing its durability and protecting it from moisture and stains.

Step 6: Maintain Regularly

  • To keep your wood bowl in optimal condition, repeat the oiling process one to two times per year, or as needed.
  • Regular maintenance helps prevent the wood from drying out and maintains its beauty over time.

Additional Tips:

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight, as they can cause the wood to warp or fade.
  • Do not soak the wood bowl or place it in a dishwasher as excessive moisture can damage the wood.
  • Use gentle cleaning techniques and avoid using harsh scrubbers or abrasive materials.

Following these steps will help preserve the beauty and longevity of your wood bowl, ensuring that it remains a cherished piece for years to come. Shop our collection of hand-turned wood bowls here.
